In India, eye camps are usually free eye check camps, and they are usually held in rural areas. The most common problem diagnosed is usually cataracts, so the resources are concentrated on handling mainly cataract patients.
Cataract surgery in such eye camps is heavily subsidized. This is arguably necessary in a country where the desparately poor have a hard time scraping together even the 20 USD or so post-subsidy rate, when the monthly income in poor areas can be 5 USD. It is a fact that poverty keeps many people blind. However, I do get concerned about the quality of surgery that is done in many such camps, and am now running my own camps to offer people a choice.
